Let me mention a few facts about Latvia`s geography and biodiversity. Latvia is the second greenest country in Europe. More than half of its territory is covered by the coniferous forests. Some of the highest pines in Europe (over 40 m) stand in Latvia. They used to be indispensable to building the tall ships. The coast of the Baltic Sea is sandy and is known for amber that comes from the pine. It would not be an exaggeration to call Latvians as the foresters. We enjoy walking, skiing, jogging, biking, picnicking in the forests. Some also enjoy picking berries and mushrooms. I have been doing it every summer since the age of three. It`s a great type of recreation to get away from the city, to enjoy the nature, and spend some time with your family or friends. Our family equally enjoys visiting both -familiar and unknown places. Picking mushrooms can turn in a friendly competition among our family members. The pine forests are quite pleasant, looking more like parks than jungles. The landscape is not dramatic either, given that there are no steep cliffs in the region. Most Latvians are avid mushrooms eaters, and the majority of them are well acquainted with a whole slew of varieties, which are edible. However, my favorite is chanterelles. The good thing for those who hate the long walks is that this type of mushrooms is available in the shops as well.
